Is this course for me?

This course is suitable for those who want to follow a programme of study related to laboratory science. Students who will follow a syllabus in which there will be a mixture of ongoing assessment and external examinations as part of the course.


What will I learn?

The BTEC National Certificate offers flexibility and a choice of emphasis through the specialist units. You will gain experience of a range of instruments and their use as well as analytical methods. You will study several key practical techniques used in the scientific laboratory and their application in the workplace.

All BTEC students are assessed by means of assignments and external examinations. The course is 60% exam 40% coursework (1 exam in Year 12, 1 exam in Year 13). Assignments allow you to demonstrate that you have skills and knowledge to achieve a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.


Anything else?

The course will be delivered in South Hunsley’s bespoke science laboratories. These laboratories house specialist science equipment and you will be encouraged to take part in practical investigative science to help you develop the strong practical science skills required for moving into scientific employment.


Entry requirements

Specific entry requirements: Standard sixth form entry criteria, including grade 4 in any of the three separate Science GCSEs or a 4/4 in GCSE Trilogy Science.

The course provides the opportunity for those who are intending to work in the science sector to gain relevant skills and a qualification that is recognised by colleges, universities and employers..
